West Coast Location
13 Mile is the name of the locality situated 13 miles (approx. 20km)
north of Greymouth, on the West Coast of New Zealand. It is a premier
coastal location on the most scenic highway in New Zealand.
The West Coast is reknowned for its rugged, wild and inspiring
environment. It is unique in New Zealand for its stunning natural
landscape. It has a remarkable collection of natural features which
includes coastal stacks, rainforests, glaciers and wetlands.
Between Karamea in the north and Haast in the south there are five
national parks, two wilderness areas, a World Heritage Area and two kiwi
sanctuaries.
The Paparoa National park (which lies between Westport and Greymouth)
contains a limestone backbone that is responsible for this particular
area’s amazing landforms. These include high coastal cliffs, river
canyons, cave formations and the bizarre pancake coastal formations.
These “pancake” rocks are an extreme natural feature, and are a
signature of the “Coast” experience, as are the glaciers and reflective
lakes further to the south.
The West Coast is also strongly identified with the dense green
growth of native bush, including cabbage trees, nikau palms, ferns and
flowering rata.
The entire region provides a wealth of recreation and relaxation
opportunities.
Outstanding Natural Features and Landscape
The rock stacks in the sea at the southern end of 13 Mile bay
are the landmark Motukiekie Rocks. The coastal strip from 17
Mile south to the Motukiekie Rocks including 13 Mile is formally designated as an
Outstanding Natural Feature and Landscape area.
Coastal Protection Area
The 13 Mile locality and as far south as 9 Mile Bluff is also
a designated Coastal Protection Area. This is in recognition of
its importance as a rocky shore ecosystem, for its habitat,
geologically significant shore platform and high landscape and
scenic values. |
